As a web developer and a blogger myself, my clients ask me all the time, “Should I use Wix for my blog?” The answer depends on what you want for the long term of your website.

TL;DR: If you want something with a built-in website builder and you’re willing to pay for it long term, then yes, go with Wix! If you want something you have more ownership and control over, I’d recommend building a WordPress website instead.

What is Wix?

Wix is a website builder. It starts out free, which makes it seem like a great option for beginners. However, if you want to customize your site or access premium functions or designs, you’ll need to upgrade. Once you have the subscription, you’ll need to maintain it in order to keep your site online.

How does Wix work?

Wix is basically a software that you can use to build your website right on the internet. Like many subscription based softwares now, there are both free and paid versions available. As is usually the case, the free version is very limited so they encourage users to purchase the paid subscriptions instead.

What are some alternatives to Wix?

If you want another website builder, there are tons out there! You can try SquareSpace, Weebly, even GoDaddy has their own builder (I definitely don’t recommend it, though!). But, if you want a real alternative to Wix or to website builders in general, I’d recommend building your website with WordPress instead.

Why use WordPress instead of Wix? Lots of reasons!

>WordPress is built for blogging. It’s one of the most powerful (if not THE most powerful) blogging platforms in the world.

>WordPress is open source and entirely customizable. There are tons of plugins and themes and just about every add on you can think of. Many of them are free, whereas the ones on Wix are often paid.

>There are tons of WordPress resources out there. Because so much of the internet is build on WordPress, you can find answers to your questions, tutorials, blogs, communities, whatever you need, easily.

>WordPress is much easier (& cheaper!) to maintain. You just need to run updates every two weeks or so and make sure your hosting is paid for and you’re all set.

‘Should I use Wix for my blog?’ Summary

If you love, love Wix and you don’t mind paying for it forever, then definitely go ahead and use it for your blog! But if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to Wix, try Blogger or WordPress instead.
